Decrease Time in a Seated Postion

There are numerous articles to be found about the dangers of sitting for long periods of time. One of my top 5 hacks for increasing longevity would have to be this.

Some of the health related issues attributed to excess sitting are:

· Back and spine issues

· Weak Legs and Glutes

· Weight Gain

· Tight Hips

· Anxiety and Depression

· Cancer Risk

· Rheumatic disorders

· Heart Disease

· Diabetes Risk

· Varicose Veins

· Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

· Stiff shoulders and neck

It is certainly a long and worrisome list. I won’t go into the research or the reasons why each of these individual points are dangerous as this blog would be a very long, long read, but I will tell you that since I purchased a stand up desk a lot of problems I had associated with prolonged sitting have decreased dramatically. You may not need to go to the extent of purchasing a very expensive stand up desk (some are very hexy). I purchased a stand up desk that goes on top of my current desk (image below). I can lower to a seated position or increase to a standing position whenever I want depending on what I am doing. My lower back pain as decreased, tightness through my pec region has decreased helping my posture, neck and shoulder discomfort has decreased.

Do yourself a favour and decrease the amount of time you sit, be that at a desk, on the lounge, in the car. Take a coffee with you and go for a walk with a friend. Ride a bike or walk instead of driving, purchase a stand up desk.
